There is an important treaty that the United States signed called the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) which essentially takes the Americans with Disabilities Act international. In order to have the force of law, the U.S. Senate must ratify it by a two-thirds majority.
Your senior senator, Senator John Kerry, is Chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and is the central player for moving the CRPD. He can’t take action on it until the President ‘transmits’ the treaty to the Senate. We are working with a coalition of other organizations including the Multiple Sclerosis International Federation to urge Senator Kerry to officially ask the President to transmit the agreement so that his committee can take action.
So our request is very simple – please contact Senator Kerry by phone (202-224-2742) or by email by clicking here and ask that he formally request that the Obama Administration transmit the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities to the Senate so that the Foreign Relations Committee can take steps toward ratification.
Given that this treaty is consistent with other U.S. laws there should be little to no budget impact. Ratification of this treaty ensures the equality of all people with disabilities, including many with multiple sclerosis, and extends disability rights globally.
Thank you for your help!
